Definition:

When many people think about the term "Freelance Model" they think about a model who is not signed with any agencies and does not even work with an independent agent.  While this statement could accurately define a freelance model, there are more models in this category than you might think.  Freelance Models include every mode who is not signed to an exclusive contract with either a commercial or fashion/editorial agency.  This includes models who use several non-exclusive agencies to get work, models who work part time, and yes....even models who's only sources of work are casting websites.  So by definition...about 90% - 95% of models are considered freelance.

While some people view this as a disadvantage, thinking that only a model with an exclusive contract can make a good living, this is simply untrue.....at times...it can even be the exact opposite.
Yes, it seems like every models ultimate goal is to become an exclusive high fashion agency model, but there are a limited amount of spots available, strict requirements, and an ever-changing need to find the next "hot" look.  This is simply how the industry works, it is a business...a well-oiled machine that will keep going no matter how many people bitch, moan and complain that the standards are unfair or biased.
There are also commercial agencies that sign models to exclusive contracts.  As a commercial model, you want to be very cautious about signing one of these contracts.  There is a lot of homework that needs to be done and you need to make sure the odds are in your favor that the agency is capable of getting you full time income.

For the rest of us....We're FREElance Models!  We may use agencies to get us work, but when the work isn't there we are free to go seek out other sources of work...other agencies, other agents, casting websites etc.  In my opinion, if you are not an exclusive editorial model..this is the way to go!
There are so many more opportunities available for freelance models than there have been in the past.  Even more so now with the "bad economy" and clients not wanting to pay agency rates.  Even some top agencies (one of which starts with a letter W) are financially failing and signing on models they don't need just so they can pay their debts.  You don't want to be in an exclusive contract with an agency like that! I know many many models who are stuck in ones right now...and they aren't working! What's a name worth if you're not able to pay your bills!

So right now if you play your cards right, you are smart, business minded and you are realistic about how you look and what your skills are...you just might be able to get yourself a whole lot more work than any one agency can get for you!

  1. In any given freelance profession, freelancers sell or contract their work to a client rather than being employed by a business.
